Tips for Keeping your Pets Safe and Secure This Fourth of July!

Keeping pets safeIf you are anything like me then your pets are an important part of your family.  The 4th of July is an exciting fun time for us, but is can be a huge  source of anxiety and fear for our pets.  Many dogs become startled and run off during the holiday. This 4th of July weekend take a minute and think about the tips below to help keep your pets happy and safe this 4th of July.

–  Dig out some recent photos of your pet or pick up your digital camera and snap a shot. Nothing would be worse than not being able to give people a visual of your pet in the even that they should become lost.

– Make sure your pet is micro chipped and has proper identification tags on their collar in the event that they should become lost and then found.

–  Secure your pets in a safe area whether you decide on a kennel or a crate so you are confident they will not become startled and run off.

– If you plan on having house guest over inform that guests on your wishes to keep you pet safe. If you animals are indoor pets only make them aware of your wishes to not have them let outside.

– Many pets do not like loud and noisy environments so consider keeping the noise away from your pet or playing a calm music in their area to help ease their anxiety with all the commotion going on around them.

– In the event that your pet may become lost you can contact the Whatcom County Humane Society to see if they have found your pet you can visit them online at http://www.whatcomhumane.org/

Have a happy and safe 4th of July!

Stoney Ridge Farms- A Wonderful Fall Destination.

CIMG0032If you or your family have never visited Stoney Ridge Farms in Everson, this is the year. After 25 years this will be the family farms last Fall season. Open every Thursday, Friday and Saturday in October Stoney Ridge Farms has Fall Activities for everyone. They boast the largest pumpkin patch in all of Whatcom County, hay rides, farm animal viewing, corn maze, cafe with fresh apple cider and so much more.

My family has made Stoney Ridge a yearly tradition and we often spend the whole day at the farm. We love to walk in the barn and check out the piglets, goats, horses and donkeys. There is an abundance of animals to see and some that you can even feed. The pies from the cafe are wonderful and I highly recommend the carmel apple pie. We also purchase all our fall decorations from the farm each year including a large variety of small gourds and large pumpkins, they have it all.Stoney Ridge House

Every year we visit the farm we leave with wonderful memories, stomach’s full of fresh baked pie and a whole bunch of pumpkins and gourds to decorate our home.

During the month of December the farm will be open  to the public and is the go to spot to pick out your fresh cut Christmas tree from there large farm.  The barn is also home to a live animal nativity, holiday crafts and baked goods.

If you are interested in heading out to Stoney Ridge Farms they are located at 2902 Van Dyk Rd in Everson. From Bellingham head North of the Guide Meridian, East on the Pole Rd, and then turn left onto the Van Dyk Rd. Stoney Ridge  Farms will be on your right hand side with parking on your left. Annual Deming Log Show Coming Up This Weekend!

Deming Log Show Fallen Logger’s Memorial

If you are looking for something new and educational to do this weekend, the Deming Logging Show is a perfect fit. The Deming Logging Show showcases the history of logging in Whatcom County, events highlighting the skills of loggers, local vendors, displays of heavy equipment and machinery used in the timber trade and sustainability practices of logging.

The Deming Logging show came to be in late 1962 when a logger was seriously injured while working in the logging industry, here in Whatcom County. At that time compensation from the State Dept. of Labor and Industries was very slow. Finley came up with the idea of having a Logging Show, put on by local loggers demonstrating what they do on a daily basis. The first show was considered a success, as 800 people paid $1.00 each and seemed to enjoy it. The money went to the injured logger. The Deming Log Show is also proud to provide scholarships to local high school students and other community events throughout the year including Oktoberfest and the Woodcrafter’s Show.

The Deming Logging Show has continued year after year, raising money to help those loggers and their families. Today, the tradition of the Deming Logging Show continues on drawing thousands of spectators and fans from across the nation and several foreign countries.  Events take place this Saturday June 8th and Sunday June 9th with the actual show starting at 1pm each day. Some of the events you can watch are the log processing exhibition, log loading exhibition, axe throwing, speed climbing, choker setting, hand bucking, double bucking and chain saw bucking.  There are also several local businesses who have booths and information on displays as well as a variety of food vendors.

The Deming Log Show grounds are located at 3295 Cedarville Rd in Deming Washington.  Admission to the show is $7 for adults, $4 for children 6 to 12 years old and children under 6 are free. The show takes place Saturday and Sunday while festivities around the ground kick off on Friday.

Hope to see everyone there!
